Summary (Major Purpose of the Role):


To design new products to compliment the range of high-quality products Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare currently manufacture, provide technical support for the production and servicing of existing products and to support product related customer enquiries.


The Product Design Engineer position forms part of the Product Design Department. The design and R&D departments fall within the Product Development Team.


The role consists of the Product Design Engineer reporting directly to the Head of UK Research and Development. Work is assigned and supported by the Head of UK R&D, and where applicable the product design, conformance, regulatory affairs, product management and engineering teams.


The employee is expected to self-manage project work on a day-to-day basis using their own initiative and resources available, and is expected manage a suitable balance between working from home and in the Halifax office (hybrid working). The employee is expected to work with other members of the Product Development Team where there is a need to work alongside, support or keep others updated regarding progress of work, for example in weekly project review meetings. There is a need to liaise with other departments where necessary to provide technical support or supporting documentation, and on occasion with suppliers and customers – this can be face-to-face or over Microsoft Teams as appropriate.


Main Activities/Responsibilities:


To design and engineer new product


  • Products should be innovative and must uphold the high standard and quality we believe in at Drive DeVilbiss.
  • Manufacturing techniques and technology available to Drive DeVilbiss should be utilised when designing or modifying a product to ensure cost effective and efficient production.
  • Balance designs with regard to cost, ergonomics/anthropometrics, aesthetics, and legislative criteria whilst working to required launch date.
  • Follow the design control and document control processes as written in the company quality manual.
  • New product design must satisfy requirements outlined in a given design specification.
  • When a product reaches a production stage, there is a need to be hands on, which involves training operatives.
  • To be comfortable presenting information (internal and external), and speaking directly to customers and service engineers.
  • To ensure all CAD files, detailed drawings and supporting documentation is completed to a high standard, is well organised and accessible through following the Drive DeVilbiss document structure profile.
  • Creation of bills of materials.
  • Creation of service manuals, spare part lists, and user manuals.

To carry out design changes to existing products


  • Following the design change procedure, liaising with other departments and issuing controlled drawings to production.

To provide support to other departments


  • Service department: Part codes, technical advice, fault identification, communication with service engineers.
  • Customer service: Technical advice, product related enquiries, product code creation and bills of materials.
  • Purchasing: Communication regarding project progress, utilising the purchasing department for anything supplier related. Review of replacement parts or alternate components.
  • Production: Issuing drawings, problem identification, technical support with product sign off sheets, functional issues, component part/fabrication issues and checking parts to drawing.
  • Conformance: Supporting products through testing, providing advice and information regarding intended use and working with the team to resolve any issues that arise in testing.

Review of samples and competitor product, producing supporting documentation/reports


Competencies:


  • Ensuring product is developed to the agreed timescale, in line with company procedure, meeting the given specification.
  • Availability of product documentation, which is to be completed to a high standard.
  • New product running through production without issue, particularly with regard to the bill of materials, and detail provided in tube room, welding, and assembly drawings.
  • Technical support and professionalism.



Education and Experience:


  • Understanding and in-depth knowledge of CAD system Solidworks.
  • Ability to understand requirements of British and International Standards to ensure non-conforming areas are solved/designed out at the design stage.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • High levels of attention to detail and thoroughness required.
  • Report writing and presentation skills to be of a high quality.
  • Ability to read and create engineering drawings with realistic tolerances.
  • Work always delivered on time and of a quality demanded of the requirement.
  • Ability to use all necessary measuring equipment.
  • Utilisation of Microsoft Office package.
  • To ensure all prototype/manual work carried out is undertaken in a controlled and safe manner.
  • To have high levels of knowledge with both our products and competitor product.
  • To provide support to both internal and external customers.
  • Dealing with suppliers (domestic and foreign) where required.
  • Understanding of Drive DeVilbiss quality system, particularly with regard to design changes.
  • Working to departmental quality procedure.
  • Ensuring work is carried out within agreed timescales.
  • Undertaking of E-learning activities as required, enabling job to be done safely and correctly.
  • Understanding and working to Drive Devilbiss health & safety and environmental policies.
  • Reasonable level of fitness and good manual handling skills required due to physical elements of job.
  • Willingness to work extended hours when required.
  • General understanding of Medical Device Regulations and information required for product technical files and to understand the conformance team’s role.
  • Positive attitude.
